remember Gemma Ward? In this constantly evolving industry we tend to have short attention spans bordering on cruelty. Where the current hasn’t yet happened, and the now is already a has-been.
Gemma seems to have been such a casualty. (liberatingly by choice) Not having modeled in almost two years, this Australian beauty was very much on top of her game until she was not. She ushered in the era of the doe-eyed, doll-faced glamazon and single handedly solidified the careers of countless girls with a similar look.
Gemma’s features are insanely unique. There is almost so much wrong with her face that it ended up perfect. Her beauty is absolute and whether you find her appealing or not, the symmetry and mathematical reasoning for her intrigue is undeniable.
Her portfolio is one of the most amazing in recent years. She was the youngest to ever appear on a Vogue America cover, Youngest to be listed as fashion’s “it girl” also by Vogue, and earned a rank as one of the 15 highest paid models on Forbes; just to name a few. The list of top designers for whom she has modeled is exhaustive in the least.
So what happened to Gemma?
After gaining some weight, and a heinous comment from an editor after a CHANEL show in 2008, (in a binkini in which she was a bit fuller than her usual rail-thin frame) Gemma decided to take an indefinite break from the world that had once worshipped her. Rumors of depression post then-boyfriend Heath Ledger’s death have since surrounded the weight gain and subsequent hiatus.. but who knows, and frankly isn’t anyone’s business. Maybe Gemma just left to be a human.
Let’s be honest, im no saint to models either. I have rediculous standards and usually cast girls 5’9” or taller with a size 2 frame. Unrealistic?  not really (throngs of girls have those bodies) perhaps a bit unfair… certainly. In the words of Karl, fashion isn’t fair! But its certainly taking a toll on the perceptions of reality. Fashion is taken far more seriously by the consumers then by the people who produce it. To them, it is a business, a craft, art. To the consumer, it is an intoxicating form of self validation. I am not placing blame on anyone here, and I do understand the hypocrisy of my argument. But my rant just concerns Gemma.
Regardless of the reasons for her departure, I truely miss GEMMA! She is part of the original inspiration that propelled me to do what i do today. I immensely respect her decision and wish her the best in health and happiness, while painfully waiting for the VOGUE spread that will proclaim her comeback.
